It ends or it doesn’t.
That’s what you say. That’s
how you get through it.
The tunnel, the night,
the pain, the love.
It ends or it doesn’t.
If the sun never comes up,
you find a way to live
without it.
If they don’t come back,
you sleep in the middle of the bed,
learn how to make enough coffee
for yourself alone.
Adapt. Adjust.
It ends or it doesn’t.
It ends or it doesn’t.
We do not perish.

Suicide Awareness Instead of Cancer Awareness In Schools

Each year for the past few years, in school we have a day or a whole week dedicated to cancer awareness. Yes it is nice to have awareness over such a big thing like cancer when is estimated to be with 13,397,159 people in the United States alone, but every year we loose about 41,149 people each year due to committing suicide. Out of the 41,149 people, 5,000 of those are students. Though, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death while 8 different deaths care is mixed around the top 20 list, 4 of those (Coronary Heart, Lung, Breast, and Colon-Rectum) coming before suicide.
Many people in elementary-college don't have cancer but struggle with things like bullying, family/personal issues, or depression, some so bad they take their own lives because of it. I'm not saying one is worst than the other, but suicide is a bigger in students then cancer. I personally know how bad depression can get since I'm currently dealing with it and the stories I heard while I was in outpatient back in December for half of a month. Of course the stories I heard there I keep to myself since it's not my story to tell.

Personally I like how they do educate us students about cancer since it is a such big topic. But suicide is also very big, it is reported each day 10.4 suicides take place each day. Schools should educate students on both topics to make students realize how dangerous they both are. Maybe wait until the students are in middle school before talking about suicide with them. By doing this, it should decrease the suicides in students since they will know they are not alone in the battle and others will be there for you if you need it. I did believe I was alone in the battle but now I know that I'm not and there are people I can talk to about it. I do think that's what has kept me going since I was diagnosis with major depression.
